ASHLAND, WIS. -- The Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute at Northland College in Ashland, Wis., recently hosted presentations on Native American culture, as part of Native American Awareness Week. The first two-hour session featured presentations by GLIFWC (Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission) Policy Analyst and Attorney Kekek Jason Stark and University of Wisconsin - LaCrosse Professor Al Gedicks. A crowd fluctuating between roughly 40 and 60 people heard about tribal sovereignty and a proposal to mine the Penokee Range of Ashland and Iron Counties in northern Wisconsin.
