Take a tour of the first and most successful green burial cemetery in the Keweenaw and learn about its history and the historic township it calls home.
The Keweenaw Green Burial Alliance is sponsoring a free public program and tour of the Chassell Cemetery on Saturday, September 26. The program starts at 2 pm, at the Chassell Heritage Center, 42373 Hancock Street, about a block from the cemetery. A walking tour of the cemetery follows.
The story of a place is often recorded on the headstones of its cemetery. Come find out what we can learn about Chassell history from its cemetery and what the cemetery can tell us about the history of Chassell.
Chassell also made history in late 2015 by becoming the first local cemetery to provide green/natural burial and the first cemetery in generations to reinstate wintertime burial for green burial only.
Speakers include the following:
• Keith Meyers, president of the Chassell Historical Organization, talking about Chassell history.
• Joseph Youngman, retired employee of the Chassell Department of Public Works, who first developed green burial areas in the Chassell Cemetery.
• Kayden Norwood, Keweenaw Green Burial Alliance board member, who will provide an update on the status of green burial throughout the Keweenaw.
