Spirit of Standing Rock, by Regina Alleman. (Photo courtesy Supernova Yoga, Gallery and Gifts)
Regina Alleman's mixed media photomontages combine original acrylic paintings and photography. Compositions are digitally remixed to produce final images. Each piece often combines several photographs and paintings. A process of layering contributes depth, dimension, and texture to her pieces, adding to the complexity of the final image. Regina describes this unique "layering" technique as symbolic of life itself. With it, she explores the complex layers of the human psyche and the layers of complexity in addressing social and environmental issues. Truth emerges from a process of peeling back the complex layers which constitute image. Her probing work explores the fragility and beauty of the earth's vanishing wilderness, cultures, and sacred places.
Regina has a love all things wild and has lived in the mountains of Arizona, California, Idaho and Alaska. Her experience includes summers living in a remote bush cabin in the Brooks Range of Alaska. She currently resides in Houghton, Michigan, and finds inspiration from the power and beauty of Lake Superior and the wilderness areas of the Upper Peninsula.

Cross Country Sports: Photography by Bryan Byrnes
"Elements of the U.P." by landscape photographer Bryan Byrnes is on display at Cross Country Sports, 507 Oak Street, through the end of April, with the addition of new photographs. This exhibit celebrates the timeless beauty of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and the Lake Superior region. Bryan’s work captures the landscapes, seascapes and skyscapes that make this area special. A New York art dealer said Bryan’s modernist style is beyond picturesque -- it’s about elementalism, breaking scenes down into their elements -- and is not considered mainstream. By taking a different and sometimes unconventional approach with angles, perspectives, and lighting, Bryan offers a unique view of nature’s main attractions in the U.P.
Stop in for refreshments from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 7, for an open house and a chance to chat with Bryan about his work. For more information call 337-4520 or check Cross Country Sports on Facebook.

For July, Cross Country Sports, 507 Oak Street, will host a very special exhibit by Minnesota artist Josh K. Winkler, assistant professor of printmaking at Minnesota State University - Mankato, Minn. He works with traditional and contemporary print media, including woodcuts, drawings, etchings and lithographs. The works in this exhibit reflect on the history of Euro-American settlement in the United States and the difficult narratives of American westward expansion -- how the destruction of forests and waterways and the devastation of native peoples continue to teach us lessons on sustainability, the importance of our natural resources, and cultural discrimination.
As an artist, Josh states: "I am interested how humans manipulate and label the land -- how time, politics, and social change alter the context of both natural and inhabited locations. By combining personal experience with historical investigation, I build layered landscape narratives to reflect on an uncomfortable disconnect between contemporary Americans and the history of the land. I utilize a range of drawing, printmaking, and sculptural processes to facilitate these ideas."
An open house with refreshments will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. this First Friday, July 1.

First Friday, April 3, in Calumet to offer art, music, poetry, more ...
Mask of amphibious cat, sculpture by Tom Rudd. Read the story behind the mask below! (Photo courtesy Galerie Bohème)
CALUMET -- First Friday in Calumet, April 3, 2015, will offer new exhibits, art activities, music, refreshments and more.
Galerie Bohème: "More Good Art" and story of cat sculpture
Galerie Bohème will exhibit "More Good Art," a presentation of new works by local artists. The opening reception for this April exhibit will be from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on First Friday, April 3.
Artist and Galerie Bohème host Tom Rudd recounts this story behind his cat sculpture, part of the new exhibit:
"On a perfectly calm summer day I had the good fortune to canoe Lake Superior, specifically the inside passage between Eagle Harbor and Esrey Park on the windward side of the Keweenaw Peninsula. I paddled and drifted between submerged rocks, dodged ancient basalt outcroppings and small islands.
"Just east of the largest small island I came upon something startling and exciting.
"For the past many decades I have searched for the true Lake Superior monster, and here stretched out on the rocks in front of me were the ghostly remains of the very beast.
Lake monster ghostly remains. (Photo courtesy Tom Rudd)
"Questioning the life of this critter I came to the conclusion that this had been a cat, an amphibious cat! I decided to render my impression of the amphibian creature in the form of a mask to at least give her a face. Perhaps later I will guess the remaining anatomy, the life style, feeding habits, etc., of the aquatic feline.
"So for now check out the mask that scared the bejeepers out of our cat."
Galerie Bohème is at 423 5th Street in Calumet. Call 906-369-4087 for more information.
