"Disruption" movie from 350.org to be screened Sept. 7 at Orpheum Theater in Hancock

HANCOCK -- A free screening of the 350.org film Disruption will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, at the Orpheum Theater (Studio Pizza) in Hancock. The film is being screened around the country -- in living rooms, church basements, and community centers -- in anticipation of the People's Climate March, which will be held in New York City on Sunday, Sept. 21, 2014.

Mark Jeranek, a Michigan Tech doctoral student studying environmental restoration in the Forestry Department, will be the host and M. C. for the event.

"I have been active in environmental education and activism for many years, and the reason that I decided to host this event is because disinformation and the distortion of facts make me angry," Jeranek said. "It does not matter what someone believes as long as those beliefs are grounded in fact."

Jeranek said he originally planned to show the film, which is less than an hour long -- allowing time for discussion -- in his living room. However, he soon learned more people are interested in the film.

"Since there is sufficient interest, the size of the event has grown beyond the confines of my living room and owner of Studio Pizza in Hancock, Mike Shupe, has graciously agreed to let us use his theater for the event," Jeranek noted.

The event is open to the public. Admission is free, and refreshments are available for purchase from Studio Pizza.

Hancock Tori to hold meeting Apr. 24

HANCOCK -- A meeting for all those interested in Hancock's Tori market -- sellers, customers and friends -- will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Apr. 24, at Studio Pizza in Hancock, across from the Tori location on Quincy Street.

The Tori will open on Saturday, June 2, this year. Hours will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Orpheum Theater to host singer songwriter showcase from Mostly Midwest Jan. 20

HANCOCK -- The Orpheum Theater in Hancock, home of Studio Pizza, will host MostlyMidwest.com's first songwriter showcase at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $5. Free Mostly Midwest buttons with admission!

Congressional Candidate Gary McDowell to visit Hancock Dec. 11

HANCOCK -- The Houghton County Democratic Party will hold their regular monthly party meeting at a different time and place this month. Instead of the first Wednesday, they will have a short party meeting at 1:30 p.m. this coming Sunday afternoon, Dec. 11, at Studio Pizza and Ice Cream on Quincy Street in Hancock.

The meeting will precede a special social event to welcome U.S. Congressional candidate Gary McDowell to Houghton County. McDowell is scheduled to appear at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, in the Orpheum Theatre (at Studio Pizza).

The public is welcome to attend the event and bring friends and family to meet Candidate McDowell and find out why he wants to be the next person to represent Michigan's 1st Congressional District.

HANCOCK -- Breathe Owl Breathe will be on stage at the Orpheum Theater Wednesday night, Dec. 7 (that's tomorrow!)! Little Wings will open the show around 8 p.m., and doors open at 7:30 p.m. Arrive early, this show might sell out! Admission is $10 for Adults ($5 for 12 and under).
