HOUGHTON -- Strong winds on the Michigan Tech campus today did not discourage students, faculty and staff from lighting candles for moments of silence and prayer to honor the thousands killed, injured and missing since the May 12, 2008, earthquake hit the Sichuan province of China.

Michigan Tech's Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA), International Programs and Services and a number of Black students' organizations sponsored the vigil and offered refreshments afterwards to participants.

MTU's Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA) is collecting donations for the earthquake victims. They will have a donation table in the MUB Commons from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, the third day of their donation event. Those who wish to donate off campus or at another time can write a check made out to CSSA 2008 Earthquake Donation and deposit it in their account at the Wells Fargo Bank. Visit the CSSA Web site for more details on how to donate or email czhong@mtu.edu.

Donations can also be made directly through the Embassy of China Web site or by phone at 202-328-2500 or 202-328-2574.
