Calumet Art Center to host First Friday double event May2

CALUMET -- Calumet Art Center will host a First Friday double event tonight:

Horizons High School will present "The Nature of the Keweenaw: A Silent Auction" from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. TONIGHT, First Friday, May 2, at the Calumet Art Center.

The art was created by the graduating class of 2014. Faculty member Chris Davidson expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity for Horizon students to have the full art experience from the creation of the art to the sale, or in this case auction of their pieces. There will be a bake sale and a raffle that features special art pieces by local artists. Music will be provided by Horizon’s students. Proceeds will go to offset the expenses associated with Horizon’s 2014 graduating class.

Baltimore Album Quilt show by artist Gina (Salmi) Heck tonight

Baltimore Album Quilt artist Gina (Salmi) Heck grew up in the Houghton area across the street from her grandparents’ farm. She eventually attended Michigan Tech, married and then moved to another state. Years later she and her family returned to Michigan and she earned an Interior Design degree from Michigan State and went on to become an Interior Design Consultant and Advertising Manager for a large department store in Lansing.

While living downstate near Lansing Gina took a few beginner lessons in quilting. It brought back memories of her grandmother sewing on her machine in the kitchen of the farmhouse. That’s when she realized that sewing and therefore quilting were a natural part of her heritage.

She became particularly interested in the historical features of quilting with the German applique method of scherenshnitte which is the basis for Baltimore Album Quilts. Of her quilts that will be on display in the Calumet Art Center Performance Hall, two are of the Baltimore Album style.

Hours will be 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. For more information call 934-2228.
