HANCOCK -- The Hancock Chalet is now open on a daily basis for skier warmup, restroom use, etc. It is opened sometime in the morning and closed about dark.

Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club to meet TONIGHT, Nov. 14

HANCOCK -- Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club (KNSC) will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. TONIGHT, Wednesday, Nov. 14 -- a week early this month due to the Thanksgiving holiday. KNSC to hold free pine tar clinic Nov. 18

KNSC will sponsor a free pine tar clinic at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, at the Hancock Chalet. Pine tar is used to seal (waterproof) the bottom of wood cross country skis and create a good surface for wax adhesion. It also can be used as the "wax" under very cold conditions. So, dig out those old neglected wood skis, bring them to the chalet, and get 'em prepped for the trails this winter. Questions, call Jay at 487-5411 or email him at jbgreen45@charter.net.

Ski Club to host luminary ski Jan. 14 at Maasto Hiihto

HANCOCK -- The Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club (KNSC) will host a luminary ski from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday evening, Jan. 14, at Maasto Hiihto. A 2K ski trail (with a short cut for 1K) will be lit with candles starting at the Hancock Chalet. A fire will be provided in the parking lot and hot chocolate and goodies in the Chalet. Bring the family. Extra goodies to share would be appreciated by all. No fee but donations appreciated.

KNSC's John Diebel reports groomers have been rolling and dragging Maasto Hiihto/Churning Rapids trails since yesterday.

"This last storm was just what the doctor ordered," Diebel writes. "We hope to have tracks set on all trails by this afternoon. Conditions should be excellent for the luminary ski from the chalet 6-8 p.m. Saturday night. Think snow."

Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club to hold moonlight ski and bonfire Dec. 3

HANCOCK -- Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club's moonlight ski and bonfire will take place as scheduled at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3. Because of lack of snow, the event will be moved to the Chalet, located at the Houghton County Fair Grounds/Hancock Driving Park. KNSC will provide refreshments and a light meal to say "thanks" to the numerous trail supporters and volunteers.

For the evening's special entertainment, all skiers will perform the Heikki Lunta dance so trail grooming and skiing can commence soon. And, of course, a fire will be going.

"Woof!" says Gromit. "We had so much fun (last year), we're doing it again!"

If anyone would care to see how to train your very own trail mutt, a quick demonstration will precede the dancing. This event is open to the public, but RSVP by email or phone is required. Pine Tar for wood skis Nov. 19

Wood skis require an application of pine tar on the bases. The pine tar repels moisture and holds the wax; in extreme cold it acts as a wax. Learn how to apply the pine tar: Bring your wood skis and pine tar them or just come and watch from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 19, at the Hancock Chalet.

For those new to the area, KNSC is a nonprofit club that maintains the Maasto Hiitto/ Churning Rapids classic cross country ski trail system in and adjacent to the City of Hancock.
