COPPER HARBOR – Sixty five artists from all over the country, music, pasties, hot dogs, brats, a bake sale, face painting, Lakers on Parade and Oreo the Skunk are just some of the items on tap for this coming weekend’s 20th Annual Art in the Park. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18, and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 19, at Grant Township Park in Copper Harbor -- rain or shine.
A wide variety of art will be featured including watercolor, moose antler carvings, photography, drums, rain hoops and rattles, etchings on slate, several different types of hand crafted furniture, fiber art and more.
Music on Saturday will be provided by Whitewater and by the Watershed Song Swap featuring Daisy May, Seth Bernard and Joshua Davis. On Sunday afternoon festival-goers can enjoy the easy listening music of Mz. Behavin’ and the Swing Cats featuring Gail English with Brian Parmeter, Greg Wright and John Munson.
The event serves as a fundraiser for several local organizations including the Copper Harbor Improvement Association, the Copper Harbor Fire Department and Hunter’s Point Phase II, Keweenaw Krayons and the Keweenaw Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
Pasties from Toni’s in Laurium, coffee furnished by Copper Harbor’s Boreal Beans and baked goods will be available for purchase inside the Community Building while the local firefighters cook up hot dogs and brats in the park.
"Ladies have been baking all week," said Art in the Park Chairperson Johanna Peters. "This is so great for the whole community. It’s bringing people in for the weekend, and it's great for businesses," Peters added.
Two quilts will be raffled off, one benefiting Hunter’s Point Phase II, the other Keweenaw Memorial Medical Center Auxiliary.
Keweenaw Krayons will be on hand offering face (or arm or hand) painting. The Krayons have also teamed up with Delaware Mine and will be taking photos of people with the Mine’s resident skunk, Oreo. Profits from the face painting and picture taking will go directly to Keweenaw Krayons, a non-profit arts and education organization.
In addition to bringing Oreo, Tom and Delaware Mine will feature the Lakers on Parade, 12-foot miniature freighters, created by owner Tom Poynter.
"We’re really excited," said Peters. "There will be top notch entertainment, high quality vendors, great food and a chance for the community and businesses of Copper Harbor to join together in a fun way."
