Portage Library to host "Postcards from the Past" at Oct. 14 Philatelists' meeting

HOUGHTON -- October is National Stamp Collecting Month, and the Portage Lake District Library will host the Portage Lake Philatelists for their monthly meeting from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. TONIGHT, Tuesday, Oct. 14.

Guest speaker and long-time stamp collector Glen Kivela will present "Postcards from the Past." In this "show and tell" presentation, Kivela will show the different kinds of cards that are collected and explain the history behind them. His collection that will be on display will feature early to mid-century postcards that show the history of the Copper Country and the Upper Peninsula.

This program is geared towards beginning and experienced stamp collectors as well as those who are curious about looking at local history from a unique point of view.

Portage Library to host local stamp collecting group Sept. 9

HOUGHTON -- The Portage Lake District Library will host local stamp collecting group the Portage Lake Philatelists from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9. The group will hold regular meetings on the second Tuesday of each month from September through May and will meet at the west end of the library.

Meetings will focus on general topics of interest to stamp collectors and share the latest news of the world’s largest collecting organization.

The Portage Lake Philatelists invite beginner and experienced stamp collectors as well as those who are curious about stamp collecting to their meetings. The group is actively seeking people who are interested in learning the art of stamp collecting, and they are eager to share their knowledge about this hobby.

Portage Library to host presentation on Scandinavian stamps June 11

HOUGHTON -- The Portage Lake Philatelists invite everyone who is eager for FinnFest to begin to a special presentation about Scandinavian stamps from 6:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 11, at the Portage Lake District Library.

Steve Lund from Minneapolis will show slides of his visits to Finnish, Swedish, and Danish stamp shows. His presentation will include descriptions of his many years of collecting Scandinavian stamps with a special focus on stamps from Finland. There will also be a display of Scandinavian stamp catalogs and books as well as items from his extensive collection including albums and exhibits. There will be time for questions and discussions afterwards.

Lund was born in Hancock and began collecting stamps as a boy. His ethnic heritage led him to specialize in stamps from Norway, Sweden and other Scandinavian countries. He has been a member of the Scandinavian Collector’s Club (SCC) since 1992, became President of the Viking Chapter (Minneapolis) in 2010 and national Executive Secretary in 2012. His exhibit of Swedish cancels and postal history, "Cancelled Lund," has achieved gold award in the United States and silver award in Sweden. His articles, reviews, reports and photos have been published in the SCC journal The Posthorn.

Portage Library to host stamp collecting workshop TONIGHT, Oct. 9

HOUGHTON -- The Portage Lake District Library will host the stamp collecting group, the Portage Lake Philatelists, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. TONIGHT, Tuesday, Oct. 9.

Ed and Liz Sheridan will present "Need a New Hobby? Try Stamp Collecting!" This workshop on stamp collecting for beginners will help people get started with what has been hailed as the most popular collecting hobby in the world. Topics include why people collect stamps, the categories of domestic, foreign and topical stamps, ways to get stamps, types of stamp albums that are available, and supplies and tools used by collectors. Handouts and resource materials will be available. The workshop will be held at the large table at the west end of the library.
