HOUGHTON -- The Portage Lake District Library will host local stamp collecting group the Portage Lake Philatelists from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14.
This meeting will focus on general topics of interest to stamp collectors and share the latest news of the world’s largest collecting organization.
The Portage Lake Philatelists' meetings are open to beginner and experienced stamp collectors as well as those who are curious about stamp collecting. The group is actively seeking people who are interested in learning the art of stamp collecting, and they are eager to share their knowledge about this hobby.

Portage Library to host Stamp Collecting, Isle Royale Nature Program this week
HOUGHTON -- The Portage Lake District Library announces two events for Tuesday and Wednesday of this week:
Stamp Collecting Group to meet at Portage Library July 31
The Portage Lake District Library will host the stamp collecting group from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31, in the community room.
Beginner and experienced stamp collectors as well as those who are curious about stamp collecting are welcome. People who want help organizing their loose stamps are invited to bring them to this meeting. This group is actively seeking people who are interested in learning the art of stamp collecting, and they are eager to share their knowledge about this hobby.

Portage Library to host Isle Royale Nature Program for Kids Aug. 1
The Portage Lake District Library will host Isle Royale National Park Rangers Katie Donovan and Barb McTaggart as their series of naturalist programs for children continues.
From 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 1, kids will learn what they can do to keep wilderness wild. In this program Donovan, McTaggart, and the kids will talk trash and learn how to Leave No Trace in the big outdoors. Kids will learn six simple rules to become a responsible camper and use their new found skills to investigate the "Leave No Trace" crime scene.
The Isle Royale Summer Series for Kids is suitable for children of all ages, and groups are welcome to attend.

Portage Library to host Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange May 21, Stamp Collecting May 24
HOUGHTON -- Regular meetings of the Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange are held on the 3rd Monday of each month, September through May, from 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at the Portage Lake District Library. The next and final meeting for this season will be on May 21, and everyone is invited to participate.
Each month features a different type of food, and May’s meeting will focus on foods that are quick and easy to prepare. Participants are welcome to bring their favorite easy dish or snack for sampling and are encouraged to share their recipes. Copies of the recipes will be made at the library. Please list all ingredients used in making foods that are shared at these meetings and identify the brand names of the gluten-free ingredients. Bringing food is not a requirement for attendance.
Participants are also encouraged to bring their former favorite recipes that they want help converting to gluten-free. Help will be available.
The Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange is organized by and for those who are interested in or required to follow a gluten-free diet. Gluten-free eating requires the avoidance of all wheat, rye, barley, and oats. Most people find it challenging at first, but are excited to find recipes and foods that are fun and easy to make and tasty to eat. The Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange is an opportunity to share those great recipes and learn from others. Everyone who is interested in learning more about gluten-free eating is encouraged to attend.

Portage Library to host 3 events for young and old Apr. 20, 21
HOUGHTON -- The Portage Lake District Library will host a Community Poetry Reading on Friday, Apr. 20, and two events on Saturday, Apr. 21: Dairy Goat Storytime and Stamp Collecting.
The Portage Lake District Library invites everyone to gather around the library’s fireplace for a Community Poetry Reading from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Apr. 20. Lovers of poetry can read their own poems or poems written by others, or simply enjoy listening to others read.
The Portage Lake District Library will have a real Toggenburg Alpine mix mother goat and her three-week-old baby kids at Storytime at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Apr. 21.
Katie Searl and her children -- Anna, Fisher, Myrica, and Lain Rajdl -- will talk about how to take care of goats. They will also explain the truth about what goats eat, describe what goats do all day, and give examples of how kid goats like to play. Children will be able to pet the goats.
There will be samples of certified goat milk, yogurt, and cheese to eat. Children will also read stories about goats and make a project to take home.
