Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange to feature pumpkin treats TONIGHT, Oct. 20, at Portage Library

HOUGHTON -- Pumpkin treats and recipes will highlight the Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange meeting from 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. TONIGHT, Monday, Oct. 20, at the Portage Lake District Library.

Each month features a different type of food, and for October’s meeting participants are invited to bring their favorite pumpkin treats for sampling and their recipes for sharing. Copies of the recipes will be made at the library. Please list all ingredients used in making foods that are shared at these meetings and identify the brand names of the gluten-free ingredients. Bringing food is not a requirement for attendance.

Participants are also encouraged to bring their former favorite recipes that they want help converting to gluten-free. Help will be available.

The Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange is organized by and for those who are interested in or required to follow a gluten-free diet. Gluten-free eating requires the avoidance of all wheat, rye, barley, and oats. Most people find it challenging at first, but are excited to find recipes and foods that are fun and easy to make and tasty to eat. Portage Library to host Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange Sept. 15

HOUGHTON -- Regular meetings of the Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange are held on the 3rd Monday of each month, September through May, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Portage Lake District Library. The first meeting for this school year will be held on Monday, Sept. 15. Everyone is invited to participate.

Each month features a different type of food, and September’s meeting will be a smorgasbord of foods in all categories. Participants are welcome to bring their favorite dish, salad, dessert or snack for sampling and are encouraged to share their recipes. Copies of the recipes will be made at the library. Please list all ingredients used in making foods that are shared at these meetings and identify the brand names of the gluten-free ingredients. Bringing food is not a requirement for attendance.

Participants are also encouraged to bring their former favorite recipes that they want help converting to gluten-free. Help will be available.

Portage Library to host two healthy eating events

HOUGHTON -- Portage Lake District Library will be hosting two events related to healthy eating this week: the Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange on Monday, Sept. 16, and the Summer's Bounty Social on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange to meet Sept. 16 at Portage Library

A meeting of the Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 16, at the Portage Lake District Library.

Participants are invited to bring their favorite gluten-free dish or snack in any category for sampling, and they are encouraged to share their recipes. Copies of the recipes will be made at the library. Please list all ingredients used in making foods and identify the brand names of the gluten-free ingredients. Bringing food is not a requirement for attendance. The main focus of the meeting will be to join the conversation about eating a healthy gluten-free diet.

Friends of Portage Library to host Summer's Bounty Social Sept. 17

The Friends of the Portage Lake District Library invite everyone to bring their appetites and favorite summer dishes to share for an evening of good eating among good friends.

The Summer’s Bounty Social will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, at the library. For this potluck event, people are asked to bring their favorite dish made from locally available fruits or vegetables. Foods can be fresh or frozen, sweet or savory, and hot or cold. If participants want to share their recipe, copies for all can be made at the library.

Community garden members and local producers who want to participate may set up a display with information about their project or business.

Door prizes featuring local food products will be given away throughout the evening. Guests will enjoy an arrangement of summertime music, and table service and beverages will be provided by the Friends of the Library.

Portage Library to host Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange Oct. 15

HOUGHTON -- The Portage Lake District Library continues to host meetings of the Gluten-Free Recipe Exchange from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on the third Monday of each month, September through May.

On Monday, Oct. 15, Eco Holistic Health Coach Shelby Laubhan will lead a lively discussion on the hot topic of eating a gluten-free diet for better health. One out of ten Americans is either gluten-intolerant or has gluten-sensitivity, and the number continues to rise. Laubhan will explain how gluten, which is found in wheat, rye, barley and sometimes oats, can cause pain and suffering by way of joint inflammation, digestive dysfunction, neurological disorders, and autoimmunity issues. She will also show how a gluten-free diet can greatly improve one’s health in a number of ways that include an increase in energy, elimination of bloating, and the clearing of brain fog.

Laubhan has been gluten-free for 28 years and is a professional EcoHolistic Health Coach. She helps clients create a healthier and happier life, have more energy, and permanently reach health and life goals that include weight loss and stress management. Her practice, Jai Yen Wellness: EcoHolistic Health Coaching and Retreats, also provides gluten-free options and resources, cooking and baking guidance, party menu planning and shopping assistance.

Participants may also bring samples of their favorite gluten-free bread, rolls and biscuits for sharing and are encouraged to bring their recipes. Copies of the recipes will be made at the library. Stamp Collecting Group to meet at Portage Library

The Portage Lake District Library will host the stamp collecting group from 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 24, in the community room.

Beginner and experienced stamp collectors as well as those who are curious about stamp collecting are welcome. People who want help organizing their loose stamps are invited to bring them to this meeting.
